HERE'S a faithful companion that.does not need to be fed or house trained, it might even bring you a bit of good fortune this Lunar New Year.
Presenting iDog, the music-loving canine. Don't expect it to guard your home, though,
because this pup is only interested in the music.
This electronic pet is like an overgrown Tamagotchi, and just like any other pet (virtual or otherwise), it needs love and care.
I have to say that caring for iDOG is far easier than a Tamagotchi that needs to be fed,
pampered and sometimes "cleaned."
iDog only needs to be fed and loved. And if music is the food of love, feed it to this canine. Trust me, it'll appreciate it.
The makers of iDog, Sega Toys, says that the moods and personality of the dog are
affected by the type of music you feed it. Classical music supposedly calms it while Rock turns it into a rebel dog!
l found this claim to be untrue. l "fed" iDog all kinds of music from Classical to Hip Hop and it appreciated them all (it did seem to have a slight preference for Rock and Dance tracks though). Even after being put through all that, iDog was a well-mannered and good tempered little pup.
Swaying to the beat
You can tell when iDog really likes the music you feed him from the way it moves. For
example, it vigorously moves its head and ears when he is really "excited" about a tulle.
This is contrary to what the creators say about it "dancing" to the music. This claim turned out to also be untrue and frankly, I find nothing exciting about a dog
bobbing its head to music. My two mongrels can already do that }
iDog can also be attached to any audio device as an additional speaker using the bundled speaker jack.
But don't expect to have superior sound quality as iDog only has a single speaker, and the sound produced was very scratchy.
Besides feeding it with music, iDog also enjoys a nice pat on the head and a playful poke on its nose.
It expresses its enjoyment by playing a cheery MIDI tune and a flashing a set of colourful lights.Discipline is crucial even if it is a toy dog. To teach this puppy a little lesson, just flick its tail.
It won't mind the odd flick oncein a while but do it too many times and it will get annoyed, it shows this by flashing red lights and, playing a haunting MIDI tune.
That's all folksUnfortunately, that is all that the iDog can do. I was really disappointed because it was presented as an intelligent toy. Naturally, l expected it to do more than just bob its head.
The amusement I got from this toy dog was only temporary. 1 was excited when I first received it but lost all interest in it the next day.
Nevertheless, iDog is a cute little music-loving toy that children will undoubtedly appreciate while "young-at- heart" adults can use it as a desktop prop to cheer them up on a bad day at the office. Pros: Cute; can be used as a speaker; fun to play with.
Cons: Poor sound quality; limited features; novelty wears thin quickly.
